I decided to take some time for myself after I finished a couple of exams last week. Nothing like a little paper to help relax! My big candidacy exam is coming up soon though...and I'm terribly anxious about it! All my dreams have been about failing things lately. They are hilarious dreams, but this is getting ridiculous...
OKAY! I need some advice! I think that the bright center in this mandala is a major focal point and really distracting. I went through six or seven versions of the center--small dark circles, small hollow circles, etc, but I hated them all! It is VERY difficult to make a circle that tiny that actually maintains the shape of a circle! SO! Does the empty center bother you? If so, what would you like to see there? I think I'll just leave it as is. Thanks for the opinions!

Haha, are you me? I love this, really beautiful cutting and such an intricate piece. Lovely work! (Also I like the empty centre as a focal point, it's steadying from the intricacy of the rest!)
This is really beautiful. I love the choice of colors and your cutting is really nice too. I know you crossed out the question about the inner circle, but for what it is worth, I think the circle looks fine. The proportion of the circle with the expanding rings of the floral design is dead on.
Thanks for the opinion. The center was definitely one of those things I fretted over for ages while cutting, but after the finished piece sat on my coffee table for a few days, I decided I liked it. Funny how things grow on you
Hi Gail, How are you? Best of luck on the candidacy exams! And no, the empty center does not bother me. It creates a focal point and then your eye travels outwards. What did it do when it was left solid? Did you try making the dark ring around the empty space as thick as the first dark ring? Well, this is lovely work. I am glad you can have your relaxation make such a beautiful thing. I also wonder what it would look like if the backing paper showed a centralized gradient of values like a smooth bullseye of a grey scale.
Haha, are you me?
Good luck with your candidacy exam!
